Reflection #2

In Wednesday’s class, we had a discussion of the freedom of speech in the college. In my opinion, we should take the freedom of speech under the rules that the college request the students to obey. We have the freedom of speech, but that doesn’t mean we can say anything we want to say. Something just can’t be spoken out as they are not the language we can use in the class. Although different people have their different opinion of the same thing, we should think about the others before we speak out something. Without thinking, we may say something that is hurting the others or against the rules about speech in the college. For me, the freedom of speech is basing on the thoughts we have already taken; so I think it’s really important that to think before to say something.

  1. Hi Jia,
You raise a point I hadn’t thought about before, self-censorship. Where do we learn to censor ourselves? Do we follow the rules based on the context we find ourselves within (ie school, work), our peer groups, and/or our notions of politeness? Does our social-compact demand that we regulate ourselves in terms of our behavior and speech?

  2. I agree that students should have to follow the student code of conduct if they are going to the JC. We should have the right to voice our opinion, but not in a way that is offensive to others. I think that for us to be able to learn in a positive environment, we need to be aware of what we say and how we affect other students.

  3. Agreeing with you and alison, its important that students voice their opinion but not in a way that can be taken offensively. Also, I think its SO important the professor and the students to create a comfortable learning environment. However, many people doesnt take in consideration the consequences of their action, or feeling of others.

  4. Excellent point. It is tremendously important to think before you speak although; I have slightly different reasoning. Often times when I'm in a heated debate, my opposer doesn’t even listen to what I have said before jumping to a conclusion and beginning their counter attack. I just wish people could listen, pause, process, then construct their thoughts based on what has actually been said, then voice their own opinion.
