Reflaction 1

What will you think of when you see a flag of a country? I will think of the country that does this flag belong to. For me, a flag is the sign of a country, and it is standing for its own country. People should take as much respect to the flag as its country.
After I have read the essay “Why Flag-burning Should Not Be Permitted”, I agree with Luke Saginaw has said: “Yes, it is only a piece of cloth, and it may even been manufactured in China, but it is something that people have literally died for, literally died for.”
As I have said, the flag of a country is a sign of this country, and people really have literally died for it—not a piece of cloth, but the country that it stands for.
The flag of a country, for my own opinion, is just like the picture of a person. When someone does burn your picture, it does not take the respect to you, and it does not only sorry for a piece of paper.

  1. Yes it is representing a country. In this case a country that protects peoples freedom of expression. Expression that can even be aimed at the country that the flag is a sign of. You can have respect for your country and still question it and protest its actions. So i believe it is ok to use the flag( a sign of a country) to express your believes that you have with that country. And the flag is not a person. You cant relate the two.

  2. I thought an interesting statement made in the flag-burning essay is that the author has no problem with people burning copies of the constitution - a document that literally states the ideals this country stands for. Perhaps the constitution does not have as much iconic significance as the flag does, but I would find someone burning the constitution at least as offensive as someone burning the flag.

  3. That quote from Saginaw stuck in my head after I too read that essay. That last paragraph of your post is so interesting and I think it is a perfect comparison to the issue of flag burning. I think that it is sad for people to think that it is ok to burn a flag and defend it by saying it is there first amendment right.
